Yesterday was the first day of school. I have a good class this year, with great parent support! I will post pictures of my classroom soon.
Anyway, yesterday afternoon one of my students with special needs runs in from the bathroom to tell me:
"Mrs. Casperson, there is a boy in a green shirt who is saying mean things about you in the bathroom."
I told him that wasn't very nice and thought we would leave it at that but this little guy just thought what was said was so horrible. He quickly proceeded to tell me:
"He called you a midget. I told him that was my teacher and to stop."
At this point I can't wipe the smile off my face, as this boy is taking this comment very seriously. I just kept thinking what a "meanie" the boy in the green shirt was! I guess he will remain a mystery to us and it just goes to show that my height is still being addressed in the school house. Oh man...
Happy first day!

Chicks
After many attempts, my fourth grade class successfully hatched three eggs! To say my students the whole school was overjoyed is an understatement.
Last Thursday, during math class, Hershey was born. All my math students got to see it come out of the egg and they loved it! Shortly after Hershey was born we saw a pip in another egg, and that night came Snickerdoodle. We were all very excited to see Snickerdoodle in the incubator the next morning. I quickly pulled him out and within 15 minutes, Shadow made it's debut.
Surprisingly enough, I managed to keep the chirping fluff balls as an incentive for good behavior. It has been pretty successful so far. On Friday they will go back to the farm, and Mrs. C will end her chore of cleaning the poop twice a day. Yeah!
Now that the new additions to the classroom have made their school debut, it's time for them to hit the web. Enjoy!

April Fools Day
I was a little nervous this year for April Fool's Day seeing as I have a very emotional bunch of kiddos. But surprisingly, everything went pretty well! I got many "there's a spider on your head" or "Mrs. C there is a chicken in the hallway!" It's amazing how much funnier we get as we're older.
One of the best jokes I've heard came from the third grade classroom. Too bad I can't use it next year...so to anyone looking for a funny joke here you go:
Mrs. Buttars walked in on Friday morning and told her class that she just got out of meeting with the the principal about what to do in the event of a flood. She taught them everything they needed to do in case of a flood.
She started with having them roll their pants to their knees and get to higher ground.
Then there were lots of hands and panicked faces about what to do when the water got higher than their desks that they were on.
Answer: swim.
They practiced how long they could hold their breath and their strokes for several minutes.
One girl was very confident in her strokes and informed others to correct theirs.
{Note: they are all still playing along!}
Another question was asked: "How do we open the door?"
By then everyone was taking this very seriously. Mrs. Buttars did all she could to not crack up and answered that someone would have to swim down and open it.
SOO funny! I can't wait to have this bunch of kids next year. Kids are so gullible. As for my class this year I made them all spaghetti and meatball cupcakes. A few of them wouldn't eat the "meatball" {aka no bake cookie dipped in strawberry jam}.
All in all, it was a fun day with the most BEAUTIFUL weather of the year! Here is a picture of the final product.

USU Police Blotter
Some of the most entertaining stories are written in the Utah State Statesman. The USU Police Blotter never lets us down!
--USU officers contacted an individual that was pointing a laser at a vehicle. The individual was educated regarding the unlawful use of laser pointers.
--USU Police responded to Wasatch Hall for a fire alarm. A student did not remove a pizza from the box before he cooked it. The Officer educated the student on the proper way to cook a pizza and how to deal with smoke in the kitchen.
--USU parking and Transportation came into the Police Dept. with a set of scriptures and advised us that they had found on a USU bus. The owner was located and will come pick up his scriptures at a later time.
--USU Police assisted North Park Police with a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot. Officers made contact with the vehicle and determined it was a business owner working on his laptop computer.
--USU Police responded to the Merrill Cazier Library in five minutes for a report of a suspicious e-mail sent to the library. A report was filed.
--USU Police received a report from a student in regards to an argument they had with a friend.
--Police received a report of an individual sleeping in a lab on campus. Investigation is continuing.
--USU Police assisted the Logan City Police with a vehicle that hit a deer. The deer was badly hurt and the officers were forced to terminate the animal.
***USU Police removed a bottle of Rum that a resident assistant found in a students room in the Living Learning Community. The bottle was full of apple juice, but was still in violation of Housing policy. The bottle was destroyed.
Yes...we live in this town.

Comments from Mrs. Casperson's classroom
My school, Bear River Charter School, entered a contest sponsored by Bing.com to win $100,000 for a library.
We submitted a video ...along with 700 other schools
We were advanced to the top 30...Now we're in the finals, with 14 other videos!
We need your help!!! Please vote for Bear River Charter School. You can vote once a day. We are currently in third place. Voting ends on Sunday, at midnight.
I surprised my students on Thursday afternoon with a last minute field trip to Utah State campus that we took on Friday morning. My students were SO excited by the spontaneity of this event. After we cut 2,000 flyers I talked to them about appropriate behavior when we were on campus.
Here is how the conversation went:
Me: The purpose of the field trip to talk to as many people as possible, so that we can hand out as many flyers as we can. I know that almost all of the students on campus are double your age, but they are going to love seeing you!
First hand.
Boy 1...panicked face: What if they are bullies and try hurting us? How do we call for help?
Trying to keep a straight face.
Me: All of the students on campus are very nice. In the four years I went there, I never saw a fight. If you feel unsafe, stand close to your chaperone.
Second hand.
Boy 2: What if they're DRUNK?!
Shocked, couldn't keep the straight face...died laughing.
Me: Utah State is a "dry" campus so student won't be drunk. You are not allowed to drink alcohol on campus.
Conversation immerses.
Student explaining what "dry" campus means to another student: It's very dry on campus because we live in a desert. Remember, that's why the Utah Indians lived by water.
Hilarious. This made my day.
